Saar is een blog gestart

Mijn dochter Saar is net gestart om met de hand een blog in elkaar te boksen. Heeft wat Javascript, php, Nifty Corners, nu Google analytics, ... Die richting CW zou wel eens toepasselijk kunnen worden (maar eerst gewoon slagen in 1e kan hé !). Ik vind dit nuttiger als studieobject dan gewoon een account op Wordpress nemen of alleen maar tijd op facebook verspillen ...

Update: de site van Saar (met Nifty Corners; alleen getest in Firefox, want geen enkele van haar vrienden, studenten burg. ir. in Leuven, gebruikt iets anders dan Firefox of Safari, dus niet nodig om te testen voor IE; /me tevreden om te horen dat het niet alleen bij ons is dat er geen IE in huis is ... dank u Tom om te wijzen op http://browsershots.org/ , dan kunnen we toch nog zien hoe het er voor gebruikers van IE uitziet).

Gmail shortcut keys

Just subscribed to the rubyonrails-talk mailing list. With 180 mails/day, a reasonably high traffic list. To process this, I was thinking back of the good old "mutt" days, when it was so easy to process hundreds of mails with just a few key presses (no need to use slow mouse movements at all).

A fun day

This was a fun day (beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;-).

Got through setting up my Rails test set-up to connect to postgresql next to the mysql that we already had (Rails 2.0 with Postgresql 8.1 on Ubuntu Feisty and Debian stable, which will also be the production platform). Now I can switch the application with a change of 1 line between Mysql and Postgresql (and be more sure that the development is portable between databases). A few interesting differences I saw (at first glance):

Ferret search unstable ?

We are evaluating different solutions for search in Rails. The "logical" choice proposed is Ferret (a Lucene clone for Rails). But now I bumped into this recent thread (started Jan 4, 2008):

That is: 23 + 24 February 2008, Brussels (at ULB). Below is the abstract we conceived. Now better continue coding, so we actually have something to talk about ...

ja, onze online banking ligt al een week plat; kom binnen een maand eens terug ...

... dat was het antwoord dat ik net kreeg van de helplijn van Deutsche Bank over de problemen, op mijn vraag over het blokkeren van mijn online banking account (dat was al op 22/12/2007 nadat driemaal een poging om een overschrijving te bevestiging door time-out van de servers mislukt was). Ik vermoed dat er toch enkele houders van zo'n gratis account met hoge interest waar nogal wat reclame is voor gemaakt (DBMax) zich vragen zullen stellen.

Wii

De feestelijkheden zijn grotendeels voorbij en nu staat de hele bende op en af te springen om tegen de Wii een boksmatch te winnen of tennis te spelen (de filmpjes daarvan zijn grappig, maar niet voor publicatie vatbaar ...). En dankzij het WiFi netwerkje, kunnen ze nu met een paar tegelijk met de Nintendo DS meespelen. Toch wel begrijpelijk waarom de Wii on top blijft qua "fun/EURO" gehalte (ook de conclusie van ITWire).
