Zo, dit was mijn laatste dag bij Fedict. Gisteren een goede meeting gehad met mijn opvolger en efficiënt de dossiers kunnen overdragen (vooral ODF uiteraard). Deze middag de collega's van SAS (Systems Architecture and Standards) uitgenodigd voor lunch. Een nuttige periode geweest, denk ik. Voornaamste realisaties en evoluties:

• studie van de ODF plug-ins voor MS Office. Begin 2007 tijdig aan de alarmbel getrokken en de verschillende vendors helpen overtuigen om meer aandacht aan conversiekwaliteit te besteden

Norway mandates specific Open Standards for government use by 2009

Norway made an interesting decision to mandate Open Standards by 2009:

• HTML should be the primary format for publication of public information on the Internet.
• PDF (1.4 or newer, or PDF/A - ISO 19005-1) is compulsory when you wish to preserve the original layout of a document.
• ODF (ISO/IEC 26300) must be used when publishing documents that are meant to be changed after downloading, eg. forms that are to be filled in by the user.

Gisterenavond op de OpenCoffee Club Brussels. De hele avond toffe babbels met entrepreneurs, web designers, lawyers, developers, ... Interessant, met een duidelijke "business/entrepreneurial" insteek.

Agile Web Development with Rails, Second Edition

Finally found time to pick-up my new Second Edition Rails book at HCW in Leuven last weekend. Starting to reread it an play around ... well the difference is striking. Already in the very first "Task A" connecting to the database (page 62) and creating the first table (page 64), the Second Edition now uses the clean approach of migrations to create table definitions (instead of the ugly manual sql CREATE TABLE ... that was still in the First edition op page 54).

Nederlandse Tweede Kamer keurt enthousiast het actieplan voor open standaarden goed

Gisteren is in Nederland het door het Ministerie van Economische Zaken voorgestelde actieplan voor het gebruik van Open Standaarden en Open Source Software bij de (semi-)publieke sector enthousiast goedgekeurd in de kamercommissie Economische Zaken van de Tweede Kamer.

Sun ODF plug-in 1.1 now works with MS Office 2007 (SP 1)

SP 1 for MS Office 2007 was recently released, and after waiting a little bit for the download and the install (233 MByte), I was able to confirm the message from Malte Timmerman that the Sun ODF plug-in version 1.1 now also works correctly in MS Office 2007, next to MS Office 2000, XP and 2003 (Microsoft repaired the bug in MS Office 2007 that was hampering this up to now).

LinkedIn opens up: will it allow me to make a mash-up ?

LinkedIn announced it's "Intelligent Aplication Platform". It has two types of interfaces. One is the Google API, where the application essentially runs on their servers. Another one is using the LinkedIn API and Widgets where an external application (only if the user agrees to it), can have access to the LinkedIn user profile, friends list, etc. to enrich that application. And that is exactly what I want to do: allow users to make a mash-up of my content, using information they store on LinkedIn.

Hyves.nl feest om 5,000,000 ste gebruiker

Feest bij Hyves.nl. Je moet het maar doen he ... in oktober 2004 hebben drie vrienden (Raymond Spanjar, Koen Kam en Floris Rost van Tonningen) het probleem dat ze niet genoeg vrienden hebben, ze starten een vriendensite en 3 jaar later hebben ze 5,000,000 leden en meer bezoekers dan Google ... Dit bewijst nog maar eens dat "scratch your own itch" vaak het beste middel is om een goed idee waar te maken.
